When I walk into a home for the first time, I can almost guarantee that the majority of walls and several furniture pieces will be beige.
Beige is boring, predictable, and unimaginative.
You know it, and I know it.
But, the color beige still prevails as the most common color inside homes.
I blame the overuse of the color beige on production home builders who try to use the least offensive color available in their homes in hopes of appealing to the majority of buyers.
Beige does not offend, however it also doesn't make anyone happy.
Many people select beige furniture since they feel it will stay in style longer.
Well, you will probably have the same boring feeling about beige furniture today as 10 years from now, but you will never love it.

When selecting colors for your home, think of your wardrobe.
If you wear khaki pants on a regular basis (excluding work clothes), then maybe you should have a little bit of beige in your home.
If you are not a person who would ever wear the color khaki outside of work, then you should also be the type of person to not have large quantities of beige in your home.
I don't own khaki pants - do you?
If you need a neutral for your home, opt for white, black, or cream instead.
White is crisp and clean.
Black is striking and often feels elegant and important.
Cream is a soft white neutral that coordinates with most anything.
How do you start to ban the beige?
Pick a small room - probably a bedroom or another room that is self contained.
Come up with an overall plan for that room that makes you happy.
Don't select home items because a friend/relative likes them or because they are the current trend.
Find things that you like.
Mix and match.
Create your own style.
Use unique colors.
Use many colors, patterns, and textures.
Use old as well as new items.
Have fun.
Be creative.
Go for it!
After that room is complete, you should have the confidence to continue decorating different rooms in your house in order to create the home of your dreams, not the home of someone else's dreams, and definitely not a boring beige box.
